"Spanglish": críticas ao filme/film reviews

Spanglish - A Film Review

Spanglish is a film created and directed by James L. Brooks. It was premiered and made in 2004. Spanglish contributes to the understanding of this variety of English because it shows us how Americans and people of Latin descendence relate and make an effort to understand and speak a bit of the other language.
The film won 4 awards, two of them due to the actor’s performance; Adam Sandler, who’s known by his playful, funny roles, showed he could do more serious and mature acting.
Paz Vega, the actress playing Flor Moreno could not speak English when she started filming the movie.
One positive aspect is that the film’s critical reception had 52% of positive reviews, although the negative reviews describe the film as “uneven” “ awkward” and “mean- spirited “.
The story is about a girl, Cristina Moreno who is applying to Princeton University and on her essay she tells the story of her Life.
She talks about her mother and the first job she got with Americans and outside their community. Her mom, Flor Moreno tries to keep a distance between herself and the family but ends up getting attached and involved in their problems and getting her daughter in the middle of all that too. When Flor sees the changes that being around that family is causing to herself and her daughter, she quits.

Spanglish – 2004 James L. Brooks
Spanglish was a movie released in 2004, directed and written by James L. Brooks, with some well known actors such as Adam Sandler (Mr Deeds.), Paz Vega (Fade to Black), Cloris Leachman (Bad Santa),Téa Leoni (Jurassic Park) and many others.
This movie portrays some situations that happen in real life, how people with their own ideals and convictions see themselves or their loved ones change completely and lose their identity to new situations and new people, losing their personal definition and becoming just like everyone. However this movie is portrayed in a different way to all others, as it is like a story, being narrated by Cristina Moreno in her University application.
The movie is based on the lives of Mexican emigrants that moved to the U.S and their experience with a traditional American family.
Flor Moreno (Paz Vega) and her young daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce) leave Mexico to try to achieve some life quality in America; however, this doesn’t go the way Flor expected. After being hired as a housekeeper by the Clasky family, John Clasky (Adam Sandler), Deborah Clasky (Téa Leoni), their two young children Bernice (Sarah Steele) and George (Ian Hyland) and Evelyn Wright (Cloris Leachman ), even with the language barrier, the culture clash and her own ideals to follow, Flor agrees to follow some rules she does not believe in, but the time summer came, Flor is asked to move in with the Claskys to their Malibu home and has to take her daughter with her.
Flor finds herself witnessing things she never had seen before, and feels threatened by the close relationship her daughter is having with Mrs. Clasky, just like Mrs. Clasky’s own daughter, Bernice.
After many ongoing situations Flor has to deal with, and her involvement with the patriarch of the family, Jonh Clasky, Flor decides to leave the job as she sees the behavior and mentality of her daughter changing.
All the actors, the well known ones and the not so well known ones, performed well, they were all into their characters and were able to pass the important message of the movie, although some had more experience than others. Due to their brilliant performance, whoever watches this movie is able to understand everything that is going on and slowly understand the message before actually getting to the end of the movie.
This movie has also contributed to the understanding of a new variety of English, “Spanglish”, it shows how these languages are formed, the different accents and how ‘easy’ it is for this blending to happen, it also shows that anyone is able to learn whatever language they want as long as they want to, and make the effort.
Although there could have been many different endings to this movie, such as Mr Clasky and Flor getting together, in my opinion the writer chose the right one.
Many movies end in romance, death, and many other things, but this one, specially the ending, is trying to pass on a message to the people.
We should not be influenced by material goods and by what others think; we should never forget who we really are, what defines us, what we truly want and what we want to become later on in life.
