Elizabeth: the golden age is a movie that portrays the difficult life of Elizabeth, the Queen of England in the 16th century. England is divided religiously, there is still a big number of Catholics in a Britain that is now Protestant. There were two menaces haunting Elizabeth’s England: the threat of a war with Spain and its mighty Armada and a conspiracy against the crown led by Mary, the queen of Scots and also a Catholic supported by Spain. The Spanish find English religious beliefs wrong so they threaten England with the Inquisition, they were also tired of the acts of piracy committed by English ships that were secretly working for the queen.
Walter Raleigh is an English pirate who falls in the good grace of the queen by making a charming and impressive exhibition of stolen products from the Spanish ships. The Queen starts to enjoy Raleigh’s presence more than she can express due to the fact that she is the Queen of England. So, through her power and intelligence she manages to keep him close.
Mary, the next in line for the throne is a greedy young lady who ends up with no head due to her hunger for power. But as the Queen punishes Mary for trying to kill her, the Spanish King reacts with a strike from his Armada because he was a supporter of Mary.
The battle scene is very well done and the special effects are quite impressive. This is not a piece of history though, history itself is actually neglected by the director as a way to emphasize the drama around the queen’s personal life. But if we forget the historical part, this film is very rich in details such as the queen’s clothing that looks always astonishing in almost goddess-like outfits.
But in this movie we can get to see the strong character of Elizabeth while struggling in different personal battles thanks to a remarkable performance by Cate Blanchett. The actress gives life to a strong, independent woman who has also a very human and sensitive side in a story that although does not show historical facts much, shows a lot of good drama and exciting action.
